This week’s giveaway is one of my favorite books ever: Wild Women: Crusaders, Curmudgeons, and Completely Corsetless Ladies in the Otherwise Virtuous Victorian Era. I bought this book for the title and have not been disappointed. It’s hard not to love a book that has chapter titles like this:
- Brazen Brides and Wicked Wives
- Twisted Sisters and Mortifying Mothers
- Shocking Scholars and Wanton Wordsmiths
- Holy Terrors and Pope Perturbers
Each chapter is filled with vignettes of women who “gave Queen Victoria the fits!” (back cover). These women refused to live in the narrow boundaries their society set for them and lived their lives by their own rules. Along with notable names like Carrie Nation, Annie Oakley, and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, you’ll also learn about women like Belva Lockwood who battled Congress for five years for her right to become a lawyer and practice law. She was “the first woman sworn in by both the Supreme Court and the Court of Claims” (p. 168). She opened a mother-daughter law firm and went on to win “a $5 million settlement against the government for the Cherokee Nation.” She ran for president with VP candidate, Marietta Stow, in 1884, winning 4,149 votes along with the “entire electoral vote of Indiana” (p. 169).
For a chance to win Wild Women let me know in the comments if you would like to see me do a newsletter (saying no is just fine, don’t worry about it if that’s your answer). I’ve played with the idea, but have yet to act on it. If you would like to see a newsletter, what would you like to see in it?
- How to study the women of the Bible and bring them out of the shadows?
- Feminist theology?
- What women are doing in the church and in biblical studies and theology?
- Women and leadership roles in the church?
- How you can help promote equality in your own church?
Any ideas you have for a newsletter would be greatly appreciated!
This drawing will be open until midnight Thursday, March 24. I’ll draw the winner on Friday morning.
Remember that I am offering a free 30 minute session of spiritual direction through March 31. Email me for an appointment. Don’t know what spiritual direction is? Watch this video.
To keep up with all the giveaways this month, you can subscribe to my blog via email or RSS. Both of those options can be found on the right bar menu.
Thanks for letting me know your opinions on a newsletter. It looks like a consensus is no. To be honest, it’s fine with me. It would just be one more thing to do at this point. Although I may do a specials newsletter for when I release new products and to give discounts, but it doesn’t sound like I need to do anything like a monthly newsletter.
Thank you for your input!
I am with Ally and Rotic27 and like the blog format. If things don’t come up in my RSS feed, I tend to overlook them.
Hey Rachel! How are you doing way up north? Are you still an American citizen or will get to vote in Canada this fall?
Shawna,
I know I’ve submitted my comment once, but it doesn’t look like it went through. I’ll try again and email you just in case. I would love to have a book with that make-me-smile title on my book shelf!
I really enjoy e-newsletters and would definitely read yours if you published one. I would like the first two areas (shedding light on women in the Bible and feminist theology) as the focus, with secondary info on the other, more practical aspects of women in the church.
Sign me up if you start one!
Blessings…

Monette, I’m glad you emailed! Askimet thought you were spam.
The title makes me smile too. How can you not love a title like that?

I agree with Ally; I prefer a blog. Hi Shawna, from Sarah Derck 🙂
Thanks for your comments Roxanne and Ally.
Ally: that’s the main reason I haven’t done a newsletter. It will probably just be a copy of the blog. And like you, a lot of my email subscriptions go unread.
Roxanne: your site is incredible. I’ve just subscribed. You do awesome work!
I like the ideas, but I’d rather it still remain in blog format – or at least readable through RSS feed readers – I have found that I don’t do particularly well with email newsletters – eventually they all get filtered into a newsletter folder for when I “have time” and I never get to them – though I tend to read (or at least skim) everything that comes in through RSS…
What a cool idea. I would love to learn more about feminist theology, so a newsletter on that would be great. Women and leadership roles in the church is a fascinating topic as well. Wild Women sounds like a great book – thank you for organizing the give-away!
